Dallas Kindergartners Get An Early Start On Money Management


Financial planners say it’s important to start saving for retirement at a young age. You won’t believe how young one group of investors is starting in Texas.

You have probably been given this advice at some point. It’s never too early to start saving for retirement. Well, several schools in the Dallas area are giving their students a really early start on managing their money. Courtney Collins from member station KERA reports.

Texas PTA’s Early Bird Achievement Award


Texas PTA’s Early Bird Achievement Award was presented to each Local PTA that accomplished early success by submitting membership rosters and dues for 100% or more of the previous year’s total membership by September 30th.

Arapaho Classical Magnet Wins Healthy School Award


Arapaho Classical Magnet recently received the Silver Award and a $2,000 prize from the Healthier U.S. Schools Challenge. School nurse Katie Morton entered ACM in the challenge. The money will be used for a kids in the kitchen program and physical activity enhancements.

Pogue Construction Flame Award


Arapaho Classical Magnet was named the winner of the 2012 Pogue Construction Flame Award, which includes $10,000 for campus use. Staff learned of the award on Thursday, October 18 as foundation representatives and district officials burst into the school with balloons and a check.

Pogue Construction President & CEO Ben Pogue began the award as a way to recognize an elementary school that demonstrates the following criteria:

  • Has earned a TEA Exemplary rating
  • Superior integration of technology
  • A nurturing learning environment and engaged student body
  • High percentage of student success and achievement

The Pogue Construction Flame Award is administered by the RISD Excellence in Education Foundation. The elementary campus can use the award on resources to support the school and its students. Every RISD elementary school was eligible to submit an application.

ACM Fights Obesity


Tuesday was an exhilarating morning for ACM students with famed Dr. Cooper of Cooper Institute and former Dallas Cowboys star Troy Aikman in the house to kickstart the fight against obesity with a new program appropriately named The Healthy Zone.
